I have seen that I am not the only person who has had this issue.Amount of packaging was completely unnecessary, the cage was in a box which was sufficient but that was then in another box almost twice the size!I purchased the cage as it said it had narrow bar spacing and I was wanting it for a mouse, however not all the bars are 8mm wide, some are more. I have had to make adjustments and use wire to pull some wider bars closer. Some of the bars I could slide my 4 fingers into!It was easy to put together but the platforms don’t stay in place. I’ve had to use ties to secure them as every time my mouse had his front paws on the bars and his back feet on the platform is started sliding away. The tubes were a pain to put together but have been sturdy and no problem since. The doors open fine and allow plenty of room to reach inside, the roofs also come off.The edges of the roof are sharp, I’ve lost count how many times I’ve taken the skin off my thigh after catching it. Bit of tape over the corners will sort that though.Over all for the price I am happy with the cage. I have had to make adjustments but they were made to ensure the safety of my mouse - probably wouldn’t need to worry for a rat or larger hamster, thankfully my mouse has not escaped and seems to enjoy his new mansion. It is really big, lots of roof space to add toys, lots of floor space for running around, good access and easy to clean out.Despite the few negatives, I would recommend this, it is a case of you get what you pay for. You could probably buy a much better quality cage but for a lot more money and a lot less space. I bought it as a temporary cage for 2 young rats. A few bars were a little bent but they bent straight again so it didn’t matter. The access is good, the front door is quite big and you can also easily take the roof panels off. I initially used the shelves but after learning more about rats I discarded them and put more ropes in the cage. The tubes were tiny and not the best quality so I didn’t use them at all. Cleaning it out was great I just lifted the top half off and could clean out the base. Size wise it isn’t dissimilar to a branded rat cage the only difference being that this has the roof design and isn’t rectangular. I would say it would be okay for 2 female rats that are given daily free roam from the cage. I do think it would be too small for male rats. I adopted two more female rats so bought another one of these cages from amazon, the second was a tad warped which made cleaning it out a bit of a fiddle to get the cage attatched to the base after cleaning. Both cages were temporary for me, my rats have been introduced and now live in a large aviary style cage. I’ve kept these cages as they fold down and can be stored easily, then should I need a ‘hospital’ cage I can partition the roof area off and a rat could easily recover in this. The cages they offered as “perfect size” were smaller than this one and way more expensive.I like the depth of the bottom which allows the rats to play in the bedding without having bits of it all over the floor. The first one I ordered only the base turned up, Amazon kindly sent me a replacement one free of charge - although it was meant to come the next day it got delayed so had to complain again. Once it finally arrived it was a little tricky to fit together but overall okay. However not even a month after purchasing the cage, I discovered that one of the bars had snapped.
