The Death of Superman

Imperfect, But An Iconic and Powerful Moment In The Superman Myth
The Death Of Superman is one of the most famous DC stories of all time. It drew national attention, and even the most casual of DC fans know roughly that Superman died in an epic battle with Doomsday, even if they don't know the minutiae of the story beats. But since this story first ran, I think it's taken a revisionist beating over the decades--through modern eyes it seems trite and cheap, because audiences are programmed now to know that Superman, like all heroes, will always, of course, come back. While all sorts of criticisms of the story are valid, there is still a lot of value in it if you read it on its own terms and try to leave your modern baggage at the door. The Death of Superman tells a striking story about an epic clash of titans, and ultimately a tragic loss of a savior, of hope, and for many readers, of innocence. Comic book characters die all the time, and when done right, it's tragic, heartbreaking, and reflects a little of loss we experience in real life. But the Death of Superman, I would argue, is more than just a typical comic book death, because the scale and power of what's lost. When a beacon of hope as great as Superman dims, DC explores certain questions it does not regularly approach, like how does the world grieve, how does it move on, and as the storyline continues in other volumes, who does it turn to next for guidance and hope? This isn't just a story about the death of Superman, but really a story that's part of the American mythos--something that never really happened, but everyone knows bits and pieces of it, even if those recollections are hazy and inaccurate. And that's something quite powerful when you think about it.

One of the Most Iconic Stories Ever!
Ok, lets get this straight. I grew up collecting MARVEL comics (Avengers mostly) and have never really cared that much about DC, but when the Death of Superman came out, I though what a great villain, story, I think I actually shed a tear! So even if you're NOT a superman fan, this is one of the best stories that DC has ever put out! DOOMSDAY is now my all time FAVORITE super villain!

Superman fans and non-Superman fans need to check it out!
This story was obviously a must-buy since it was used as source material in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It met most if not all of my expectations for how a Superman story that explores the idea that the so-called God of the DC Universe can be killed and I'm sure that a lot of people would cry after reading the last 5-6 pages of the book because you'd think it's impossible for Superman to die but he can. Even if you're not a big Superman fan I recommend you check it out!

Death Saga
This is one of the best story arcs in Superman history and is what got me into comics. This collects all the issues leading up to the death issue (Superman 75). This is a really good collection with the only problem being that the covers are not included and only appear on the back. Besides that it is good and I recommend getting this along with the funeral for a friend, reign of the supermen, and the return of Superman.

Great comic
Great novel comic. Never in comic book history did anyone guess Superman dies. Until doomsday the movie did not do this book justice.

Read this and keep the comic nice and sealed.
Just got it today and already on my third read through. Yeah a bit excessive but how could I not just read it again and again. Tales me back to my childhood reading about the heros of DC.
